As an avid angler, I understand the importance of having a reliable and durable kayak to get where I need to go on the water. After much research, I decided to purchase the Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak, which I can confidently say was an excellent decision. In this review, I’ll provide an in-depth evaluation of the Pelican Sentinel 100X kayak from a user’s perspective based on my personal experience and assessment of the product. By the end of this review, you’ll have a thorough understanding of the kayak’s design, performance, and convenience and be equipped to make an informed decision about whether the Pelican Sentinel 100X is the right kayak for your fishing needs.

Pelican Sentinel Design and Build

An illustration of me out on the water in my Pelican fishing kayak.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X is a sit-on-top kayak that measures 9.5 feet and is excellent for solo anglers. The kayak is form-molded heavy-duty plastic with pros and cons. One of the benefits of this material is that it is cheap and rugged, making it ideal for anglers who want a kayak they can use without worrying too much about damage. Additionally, the kayak’s design is well-suited for fishing, with a comfortable and adjustable seat, adjustable footrests, and ample storage space for your gear.

However, the heavy-duty plastic also means that the Pelican Sentinel 100X is heavier than other, higher-end models of lighter materials like Kevlar or carbon fiber. While this weight can make the kayak less efficient on the water and more challenging to transport, it also makes it more durable and able to withstand the wear and tear that comes with regular use.

One thing that stands out about the design of the Pelican Sentinel 100X is its stability in the water. This kayak design means it will be stable and easy to maneuver, making it an excellent choice for anglers who want a kayak that is easy to handle and provides a steady platform for fishing.

Overall, while the Pelican Sentinel 100X may not be the lightest or most high-end kayak on the market, its form-molded heavy-duty plastic design makes it an affordable, rugged, and reliable option for solo anglers who want a kayak that can handle a variety of fishing conditions.

Performance on the Water

Performance on the Water of the Sentinel fishing Kayak explained by Jeremy Shantz.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides a reliable and comfortable experience on the water. The kayak has a relatively quick speed, with the plastic construction providing little resistance. However, this can also make the kayak feel unstable in choppy water conditions, so it’s best suited for calmer waters. The kayak’s tracking can take some getting used to, but it’s not a significant issue once you get used to it.

One aspect of the kayak’s design that affects its performance is the sit-on-top style, which provides a higher center of gravity than traditional sit-in kayaks. It can make the kayak feel less stable than a sit-in model, especially in choppy waters. However, the sit-on-top design also provides a more comfortable and accessible experience for anglers, with ample storage space and easy access to gear.

In terms of maneuverability, the Pelican Sentinel 100X is designed to be easy to handle, making it an excellent option for solo anglers who want a kayak they can handle easily on the water. The kayak is stable and provides a steady platform for fishing, which is critical when casting and reeling in your catch.

Overall, the Pelican Sentinel 100X is an excellent kayak for anglers who want a reliable, comfortable, easy-to-maneuver kayak for calmer water conditions. While the kayak may feel a bit unstable in choppy water, its speed, tracking, and stability make it an ideal choice for bass fishing in calm waters.

Comfort and Convenience

Pelican fishing kayak Comfort and Convenience explained by Jeremy Shantz.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides anglers a comfortable and convenient experience with minor drawbacks. The kayak’s design best suits individuals under 6’2″, as taller individuals may feel cramped in the seating area. However, for those of average height, the kayak provides ample space and a comfortable sitting experience.

One aspect of the kayak’s design that enhances its convenience for anglers is the presence of two pole holders, which allow for easy transportation of fishing poles while paddling. However, the placement of the pole holders requires care while paddling, as you don’t want to hit your bars with your paddle accidentally.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X provides enough storage space for a modest fishing expedition for a solo angler, with enough room to pack a fishing bag, two poles, snacks, or a small lunch bag. However, the storage space is limited, so don’t expect to bring much more than the essentials.

One area where the kayak could improve is the seat’s padding. While the seat is adjustable and comfortable, the padding is thin and can lead to discomfort after prolonged use. Those who suffer from hemorrhoids will know what I’m talking about. Adding extra padding to the seat can help alleviate this issue and make for a more comfortable fishing experience.

Overall, the Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides anglers with a convenient and comfortable experience, ample storage space for essential fishing gear, and an adjustable seat that you can improve with extra padding.

Pros and Cons

An illustration I made with a fisherman on a Pelican Sential sit-on-top fishing kayak.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages, which can help you decide if it’s the right kayak for your fishing needs.

One of the most significant advantages of the kayak is the built-in bungee hold-downs behind the seat, which provide a convenient storage space for gear without worrying about losing the bungee cords. Another advantage of the kayak is that it’s easy to clean and doesn’t stain easily, ideal for anglers prone to spills and splashes while fishing.

However, there are also some drawbacks to the Pelican Sentinel 100X kayak. The relatively heavy kayak comes in at 44 pounds, making it challenging to transport without additional equipment, such as a dolly.

For reference, I weighed my kayak when it was wet and came in at 47 lbs. Add a touch of gear, and it’s a bit much if you have to portage.

The added expense of purchasing a dolly for transportation can be a drawback for some anglers. Additionally, the kayak doesn’t come with a paddle, which is another added expense to consider when purchasing the kayak.

Another disadvantage is that the kayak’s stability may be affected in choppy waters due to its sit-on-top design, making it less suitable for more challenging water conditions.

Overall, the Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides several advantages for anglers, including built-in bungee hold-downs and easy cleaning. Its weight, transportation requirements, and potential stability issues in choppy waters also have disadvantages. You can determine whether the Pelican Sentinel 100X is the right kayak for your fishing needs by weighing these pros and cons.

Comparison with Other Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayaks

Comparison with Other Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayaks by Jeremy Shantz of Boating.Guide.

The Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides a reliable and affordable option for anglers, but how does it compare to other sit-on-top kayaks on the market? Here are some other kayaks I’ve tried and how they compare to the Pelican Sentinel 100X.

The Reel Yaks 12-foot kayak is a pedal-powered kayak with a paddle and a comfortable seat, making it an excellent option for anglers who want a more sophisticated kayak. However, the Reel Yaks kayak comes at a price nearly three times that of the Pelican Sentinel 100X. While the pedal-power feature is attractive, it may not be worth the extra cost for some anglers.

The BKC 11.5-foot sit-on-top kayak is another angler option, with more sophisticated waterproof storage compartments and a better seat than the Pelican Sentinel 100X. However, the BKC kayak is much heavier, coming in at 68 pounds dry, making it challenging to transport without additional equipment. Additionally, the BKC kayak comes at almost twice the price of the Pelican Sentinel 100X, making it a more significant investment for anglers.

Overall, while the Pelican Sentinel 100X may not have all of the bells and whistles of some higher-end sit-on-top kayaks, it provides a reliable and affordable option for solo anglers. By weighing the pros and cons of different sit-on-top kayaks, anglers can determine which option best fits their fishing needs and budget.

Final Thoughts On The Pelican Kayak

Final Thoughts On The Pelican Kayak by Jeremy Shantz of Boating.Guide.

Overall, the Pelican Sentinel 100X fishing kayak provides an excellent option for anglers who want a reliable and affordable sit-on-top kayak for solo fishing expeditions. The kayak’s design and build amply offer rugged durability, ample storage space, and convenient bungee hold-downs. While the kayak’s stability may be affected in choppy waters, it provides a comfortable and convenient experience for calmer water conditions.

While the Pelican Sentinel 100X may not have all the features and amenities of higher-end sit-on-top kayaks, it provides a reliable and budget-friendly option for solo anglers. By weighing the pros and cons of the kayak and comparing it to other kayaks on the market, anglers can determine if the Pelican Sentinel 100X is the right fit for their fishing needs and budget.

In summary, if you’re an angler who wants a reliable and affordable kayak for solo fishing trips, the Pelican Sentinel 100X is a solid choice. Its rugged construction, ample storage, and convenient features provide a comfortable and accessible experience for anglers of all levels.
